Is the deposit refundable? If not, you may be waiting a long while before they finally get allocated a VIN # and have a car for you. There aren't any direct "orders" w/Kia - i.e. the factory in Korea does not have any idea that you want a car. What happens is KIA America (US sales/marketing group) adds your dealer's request to their list and if and when a car rolls off the line w/your specs and they deem your dealer (not you specifically) "next in line" (depends a lot on the sales volume of your dealer) then they will "allocate" that VIN # to your dealer. What happens next is up to your dealer. Do they have another buyer willing to buy that car at a higher price? Or are they actually honest and maintain a true first-in, first-out "waiting list"? You will never know. But once your dealer actually gives you a VIN #, you should be getting that car and have a more accurate delivery timeline.
Whatever you do, DON'T "special order" a car. Meaning, don't insist on specific options like car mats, etc. Just tell the dealer the trim and color(s) you would want. Those options get installed at the ports when they roll off the boats and past inventory issues have held up cars that requested specific options. You can get any of those options cheaper as non-OEM (except maybe the HomeLink mirror, if that is still one of the options).
Hard to tell if $1K off is a "good deal" as it depends on the local market. Could be good for an east coast or west coast city, but maybe not for midwest/rural. Have you called other nearby dealers? That's the only way to know. And what are their dealer doc fees? Any other "required" dealer add-ons? Paint protection, etc?
Unless you REALLY want to buy from that specific dealer, I would just wait until they start rolling off the boat and call around to see what you can get for pricing.
But if you are putting in a nonrefundable deposit, make sure you know what all their extra fees will be - get them in writing ahead of time. They will have you by the nads once the car comes in and could make up that $1K discount just in doc fees alone...
