So there seems to be some sort of internal regulation that lowers the volume when there is a lot of bass... What's up with that? Can I turn it off? It's really annoying.

It's called Bass Roll-off and unfortunately, the only thing you can do is add aftermarket equipment (specific Line-out-converter, amps, speakers) to get your stereo the way you want it.
