Lane Keeping Assist Technology

Here in the mountains of WV it has become common practice for the DOH to use grit on the 2-lane roadways in winter to improve traction in icy road conditions. This grit also has the effect of abrading the painted lines, center and edges, so that they are often minimally visible. The DOH is often not so good about repainting them.

I cannot help but wonder how the lack of distinct painted lines on narrow 2-lane roads would impact (no pun intended) the technology of lane keeping assist, or full self-driving for those cars that have it..

Anybody know?

I don't see any way that can be helped. If the lines aren't visible to the cameras, they're not going to be able to help, unfortunately...
 
Thank you! That is what I expected. I could not think of another technology other than visualizing the lane markers via the cameras. I live on a County road, in a small town, and it has never had lines to begin with. US and state highways have lines, but they wear away as I mentioned.

My experience since buying the Sportage HEV, in May 2023, is that the tech is hit and miss. Sensors for the high beams are pretty good. Sensors for the auto wipers are hit and miss, mostly miss. I would rather that had an intermittent setting that I could manually adjust. And I have already expounded at length in another thread how bad their Nav system is.

If drivers lose the ability to reliably keep the car in their lane due to becoming dependent on technology that is questionable reliability, I wonder about the risk of me being hit head-on by someone not paying attention due to reliance on technology.

I'm not crazy about the idea of fully autonomous driving... Things like lane keeping assist really need to be used as a second pair of eyes rather than full driving. It works well for most people. Maybe too well. But people need to be reasonable with their expectations of the technology. These days, people don't seem to want to take responsibility as much as they used to.
