Got my new sportage yesterday. On the way Home from dealership 60 miles 70 to 75 mph on interstate for 40 miles 65 mph for 20 miles computer said I got 28 miles per gallon. I know short sample but pretty disappointing. Making the Rav4 look like a better choice.

Hi there. Mileage will improve as the engine breaks in. :)

Hybrids are designed for slower, lots-of-braking driving. Not much better mpg than ICE at highway speeds. Braking w/charge meter NOT pinned at bottom, means battery is charging. So slower/longer stops will increase mpg greatly!

Cold weather also reduces MPG by close to 10%.

And the hybrid system needs to “condition” the battery, which takes 3000+ mi. until full efficiency.

And RAV4s (and ALL hybrids) have these issues. Try reading the RAV4 forums…

On my last fill up, 2023 Sportage EX HEV, I had driven 293 miles and it took 7.504 gallons to fill the tank, which I make out to be a little over 39 MPG. Mileage has noticeably improved since the weather has gotten warmer. I also have almost 9,000 miles on the car, so I expect it is largely broken in. But . . . I live in the high mountains of West Virginia so a lot of up and down hills, often steep hills, which doesn't help mileage. The car's computer said I got 39.7 MPG for the last tankful and doing the math myself, the real-world result turns out to be 39.045 MPG. About half of the 293 miles was in one day, so not as many short trips, but in that one day, I crossed over two major mountains in each direction there and back.

The computer tells me I have gotten 37.6 MPG since I picked the car up last May. I have not done the math myself to check the computer, although I have all the records.

Breaking the hybrid battery in. Brand new, it will fluctuate between just over and just under 50% charge. So not much use of battery. 3Kish miles later, battery usage will be 75-25%. Many more battery-only miles improves overall mpg. You can watch the hybrid system graphic while driving consistently on highway, to see this.
