The automatic controls on the wipers work better than I expected. However, there are still times when I wish I had the “intermittent” setting so I could control the frequency of the wipers. This usually occurs in Auto mode when the wipers cycle too infrequently and the visibility out the windshield becomes too impaired before the wipers cycle again.

In the owner’s manual, page 5-109, it says “To vary the speed setting, turn the speed control knob (B).” I have tried this when in Auto mode and the wipers are not running fast enough to deal effectively with the amount of rain. However, I cannot see that it makes a difference with the operation of the wipers. The owner’s manual says nothing more about this control.

Can someone explain how and under what conditions this "speed control knob" works?

My guess is that the speed control doesn't affect the wipers when they are set to AUTO.

It being springtime here in the mountains, I have had plenty of opportunity to play with the wiper speed controls. I have not been able to find that it has any effect on the wiper speed, except that if set on AUTO bumping it to a higher setting will cause the wipers to cycle immediately one time, but no apparent change in ongoing cycle time.

Yesterday, I had an appointment in a town 2 hours away. On the return trip, it was misting rain intermittently. I had the controls set to AUTO and speed setting set to the maximum. I commonly collected too much rain on the windshield before the wipers would cycle. Finally, I turned the wipers OFF and just pushed the wiper lever UP to get one cycle of the wipers when needed.

I think it would be so much simpler and effective if I had the choice of an adjustable “intermittent” setting, in addition to the AUTO setting (which DOES work well, sometimes.)
